Post debate debate

Post by Dr Strangelove »

That was painful. I can't help thinking about what was said when Kennedy debated Nixon in the 1st televised presidential debate. Those who watched thought the young swaggering Kennedy won and those who heard it on the radio said Nixon won. Here, if you were to listen to Biden he didn't do as bad but the visuals, especially when he wasn't the focus of the camera, was horrid. Both men rambled incoherent but Trump lied so hard and often that he is immune to standards or platform critiques he will get a pass, god help us all.

Wasn't really a loss for Biden, more a pitiful showing. A debate is about a subject, not an onstage performance.
Contrary to what some think, it exposed Trump as the petty, vengeful, lying, power hungry small man that he is. And the moderators allowed him to continue and hog the air time. Not once pointing out that he failed to address the subject even when asked repeatedly or lied outright.
Most disgusting was that he blamed everything from inflation to crime and the overdose crisis on migrants, continually steering all talk to that subject like a true fascist milking a favourite scapegoat.
No doubt, Biden was awful, less so as time went on but always allowing Trump to push him off subject by rebutting the lies. He definitely could have used a couple Red Bulls or Satrbucks Double Shots before he took the stage.

His record is sound, his candidacy is deeply flawed. This is why Trump gets a pass when he should be trouncing him. Lying your face off is a sound debate tactic if it is allowed but it is up to the voter to engage.

How is this any different than the tactic the PP uses on JT with the axe the tax rallies? When the public has tuned out pounding the table with noise to drown out the discourse works so this was a loss for Biden because he is shown to be a man whistling past the graveyard. He may have policy on his side but he isn't a showman he was anymore in a debate and sizzle sells. Just ask Nixon. The debate is all about shoring up the independent voters not preaching to the choir and you don't lure them in by just showing up.

Is it though? The public has been Gish Galloped into nor knowing what is really true anymore, and should a potential leaser of a G7 nation both lie their flaming pants off and still be trusted to lead?
It's sad that we even have to ask that.

True, it is sad that the political cycle is driven more by hate of the other teams candidate then is is by love for ones chosen candidate but here we are. I can only hope that that drum beat has diminishing returns and that people who get sucked into that maelstrom and get spit out disillusioned have a clearer vision of who they really are supporting.

Remember when binders full of women was seen as a campaign ending gaff? How naive we were...

It's not any different. The public is different, dumbed and numbed down to near idiocy.
Did you hear ANY question from the moderators answered?
Did you not see Trump's face, his body language, his pursed lips and deepening red when his lies were challenged? The utter malice in his face?
Did you not notice how he seemed to have the mike far longer? How any question on anything was steered back to immigration?
Only an idiot would claim Trump wasn't lying though his teeth the whole time. Bragging about his so-called accomplishments that were so few we all forgot.
Biden utterly failed to call him on blocking the bipartisan deal on immigration just so he could have that talking point.
Biden did call out that no Presidential candidate had ever spoken about America the way Trump did, but should've pointed out that America is the 'great' now, more than it ever was (big fail)
Biden should've pointed out that inflation was everywhere and the USA was faring better than most. That President's and politicians don't 'control' it in a free market system. (big fail)

Saying Trump won the debate is like saying a debate is a TV Celebrity Roast or Gong Show. This wasn't a debate, the only things we learned we knew before: Biden's old and Trump's a malicious asshole.
