Nuclear plants can be offline indefinitely, just as long as they have water to cool the core. Once they overheat . . . basically, run.

And destroying the Novakohovka dam that was providing cool water to the reactor was not a smart thing on Russias' part. It's also why Crimea is out of fresh water. A canal from the same lake took water to Crimea.
