77% of British Columbians now have access to primary care

Post by Dr Strangelove »

In recent years the BC NDP has hired over 45,000 new health care workers, with a plan to hire 45,000 more in the next four years.

The BC NDP government introduced a major reform to how family doctors are paid, moving away from the traditional fee-for-service model to a new Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) Payment Model, effective February 2023.

They built a new medical school at Simon Fraser to train more family doctors, the first built in over 50 years.

They introduced loan forgiveness incentives tied to a guarantee that health workers remain in BC for at least five years, aiming to retain new graduates.

Made it easier for internationally trained doctors and nurses to become licensed and practice in BC, with over 900 internationally trained doctors licensed in the past year.

Signed a pharmacare agreement with the federal government to invest over $670 million across four years, providing universal public coverage for a range of contraceptives and diabetes medications, devices, and supplies at little to no cost for BC resident.

Added over 800 new family doctors and connected nearly 250,000 people to primary care in a single year.

Allowed pharmacists to prescribe for minor ailments and birth control, making it easier for people to access timely care for minor health issues and reducing pressure on clinics and ERs.

This is a list of just some of what the BC NDP has done in the last couple years regarding health care.
